Creatine monohydrate is one of the best-studied sports supplements and can support high-intensity exercise performance and lean mass gains when combined with training. Pure creatine is not a stimulant and does not naturally contain caffeine. You do not need it to get stronger, but it is one of the few supplements I think is genuinely worth understanding.
I would personally consider creatine, but I am cautious with workout supplements because I get the jitters easily. That is one reason I wanted to separate creatine itself from the stimulant-heavy pre-workout products it often gets bundled with. Pure creatine is not caffeine and is not considered a stimulant. This is my personal perspective, not medical advice.
What is creatine, exactly?
Creatine is a compound your body already makes from amino acids, and you also get some through foods such as meat and fish. Most of the body's creatine is stored in skeletal muscle, where it helps replenish phosphocreatine used to rapidly regenerate ATP—the energy currency muscles use during short, intense efforts.
That is why creatine has historically been associated with lifting, sprinting and explosive sports rather than acting like an “energy pill.” It does not work by revving up your nervous system the way caffeine does.
The form with the deepest research history is creatine monohydrate. Supplement shelves are full of exotic variations, but newer and more complicated does not automatically mean better.
Why does creatine become interesting after 40?
Our priorities tend to change. At 22, somebody might take creatine because he wants a bigger bench press. At 45 or 55, keeping muscle and strength starts to have a broader meaning.
NIH describes age-related declines in muscle mass and strength as a meaningful healthy-aging issue. Resistance training is still the foundation. Creatine becomes interesting because research suggests it can complement resistance training rather than pretending to replace it.

What does the evidence actually say?
The International Society of Sports Nutrition has described creatine monohydrate as an effective ergogenic supplement for increasing high-intensity exercise capacity and lean body mass during training. That is a much more defensible statement than the kind of miracle claims that surround many supplements.
The important phrase is during training. Creatine is not a substitute for resistance exercise, protein, sleep or consistency. If your workout program is nonexistent, a scoop of powder does not build a physique on its own.
Research has also explored creatine in older adults because preserving muscle and function becomes increasingly important with age. Results vary by study design and population, but the overall body of evidence is substantial enough that creatine is not just another trendy bottle on a supplement shelf.
Does creatine cause jitters?
This was the question that interested me personally. I am sensitive to that wired, jittery feeling some muscle and energy products can produce.
Pure creatine monohydrate is not a stimulant and does not contain caffeine. The confusion often comes from pre-workout powders that contain both creatine and stimulants such as caffeine in the same formula. If a product makes you feel wired, read the entire ingredient panel rather than assuming creatine is responsible.
That does not mean no person can ever feel unusual after taking a supplement. People respond differently, products contain different ingredients, and symptoms deserve common sense. But “creatine = stimulant” is not an accurate way to think about it.
This distinction is also why I would lean toward a simple, clearly labelled creatine monohydrate product rather than a proprietary pre-workout blend if creatine itself were what I wanted to try.
How do people typically take creatine?
A common maintenance approach in research and sports nutrition is roughly 3–5 grams of creatine monohydrate per day. Some protocols use a short “loading” phase with larger divided doses to saturate muscle stores faster, but loading is not required for creatine to accumulate over time.
For most people, simplicity has an advantage: a consistent daily amount is easier to remember than an elaborate cycling protocol. Timing also tends to receive more attention online than it deserves. Consistency over weeks matters more than finding a magical 17-minute post-workout window.
This is general educational information, not individualized dosing advice. If you have a health condition, take medications, or have been told to monitor kidney function, talk with a qualified clinician before adding a supplement.
Will creatine make the scale go up?
It can. Creatine increases water stored with muscle, particularly when muscle creatine stores increase. That can move body weight upward relatively quickly for some users.
That is not the same thing as suddenly gaining body fat. It is also one reason a person should not judge a body-composition plan entirely by the bathroom scale.

Is creatine safe?
Creatine monohydrate has an unusually large safety literature for a sports supplement. The ISSN position stand reports no compelling evidence of harm from short- or long-term use in otherwise healthy people at studied amounts, while also discussing use across a wide range of populations.
That does not turn a supplement into a universal recommendation. Kidney disease, pregnancy, medications, unexplained symptoms and other individual circumstances can change the conversation. If you are unsure, asking your doctor or pharmacist is more useful than taking advice from a gym comment section.
And if a product contains ten other active ingredients, safety information about pure creatine does not automatically validate the whole mixture.
What I would look for in a creatine product
I would keep this boring: creatine monohydrate, a transparent label, a reputable manufacturer and preferably third-party quality testing. I would not pay extra merely because the label promises “ultra anabolic” creatine or invents a complicated delivery system.
For someone like me who is sensitive to jitters, I would also check specifically for caffeine and other stimulants. A plain creatine product and a pre-workout formula containing creatine are not the same purchase.
And I would still put the supplement behind the fundamentals: resistance training, enough protein, enough total food and recovery. Read Protein After 40 if that side of the equation is unclear.
What should you realistically expect?
Creatine is not something I would expect to “feel” like an energy drink. That is actually part of the point. Its role is related to muscle energy availability during repeated high-intensity efforts, not creating a buzz.
Some people notice that they can squeeze out an extra repetition or maintain performance a little better across hard sets. Over time, small improvements in training quality can contribute to better strength and lean-mass outcomes. That is very different from taking a stimulant and feeling instantly switched on.
You may also notice a modest increase on the scale as muscle creatine and associated water increase. If you are expecting a dramatic overnight physique transformation, the marketing has gotten ahead of the evidence.
I also would not use “I didn't feel anything” as proof that creatine did nothing. This is one of those supplements where the useful question is whether training performance and longer-term outcomes improve—not whether you feel a rush 20 minutes after taking it.
Bottom line
Creatine after 40 is not magic, but it is unusually well studied. For a healthy adult doing resistance training, creatine monohydrate is one of the more evidence-supported supplements to consider for strength and lean mass goals.
My own sensitivity to jittery workout products would make me read the label carefully—but it also makes the key distinction useful: pure creatine is not a stimulant.
