For healthy adults, the general RDA is 0.8 g/kg/day. Research groups focused on older adults often recommend roughly 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day to support muscle, with higher needs in some situations. If you lift regularly in your 40s or 50s, protein needs depend on body size, total calories, training and health—not age alone.
Start with body weight, not a magic “men over 40” number
The cleanest way to think about protein is grams per kilogram of body weight. The standard adult RDA of 0.8 g/kg is designed as an adequacy target for the general adult population. It is not specifically a muscle-building target.
Expert groups studying healthy adults over 65 have commonly recommended at least 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day, partly because aging muscle can become less responsive to a given protein dose. That evidence does not mean your protein requirement suddenly changes on your 40th birthday. It does give active middle-aged men a useful reason not to let protein become an afterthought.

Should you spread protein across meals?
There is evidence that older adults may benefit from meaningful protein servings rather than eating very little all day and nearly all of it at dinner. PROT-AGE discussed roughly 25–30 g per meal for older adults. You do not need to obsess over a stopwatch; the practical lesson is to make breakfast and lunch count too.
For example, eggs plus Greek yogurt at breakfast, a substantial protein source at lunch, and fish, poultry, lean meat, dairy, tofu or legumes at dinner can get many men surprisingly close without a shake.
Food first—or protein powder?
Protein powder is convenience, not a requirement. Whole foods bring other nutrients and usually make sense as the foundation. A shake becomes useful when appetite, schedule or total food intake makes your target awkward to reach.
Whey is well studied and rich in essential amino acids. Plant proteins can work too; total intake, protein quality and the overall diet matter more than brand mythology.
Protein works best with resistance training
Eating more protein while doing nothing is not the same as giving muscle a reason to adapt. Research on aging muscle consistently pairs adequate protein with physical activity, especially resistance exercise. If your goal is preserving or building muscle after 40, the combination matters.

Is more always better?
No. Once protein is adequate, simply pushing it higher does not guarantee more muscle. Very high-protein diets can also crowd out fiber-rich foods and other nutrients. A practical day without turning eating into math
Pick a meaningful protein source at each meal. Add a snack or shake only if your normal food leaves a gap. Track for a few days if you genuinely do not know what you eat, then stop micromanaging once you understand your pattern.
